Pitt State utilizes new, geothermal unit
Pittsburg State University officials used a new climate control system on Tuesday morning to showcase the energy-saving efforts of the university.
President Steve Scott spoke to clients of universities and the media during a presentation at McPherson Hall on the new system will be used for geothermal heating and cooling McPherson Hall and Timmons Chapel. The $ 600,000 system is the first part of a proposed $ 4.5 million energy saving has been in the works for nearly a year and was recently approved by the Board of Governors of Kansas .
"It's been almost a year since we officially adopted sustainable development as one of six strategic objectives of the university," said Scott. "Now is a prism through which we see all the projects and essential part of our character. "
The geothermal project was partially funded by a $ 250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. But the savings in utility costs are expected to cover the investment of $ 4.5 million in 13 years, Scott said.
"This is another example of how good planning and institutional commitment can produce results that are both economically responsible and environmentally sustainable," said Scott.
geothermal climate system uses the constant temperature of the Earth at this depth to heat or cool buildings depending on the season.
In the new system is behind McPherson, water will be pumped through pipes and cooled at 18, 400-feet deep well, "said Jeff Flathman, president of Energy Solutions Professionals, who heads the project. The liquid is then pumped into the buildings and the air is cooled or heated by the fans dispersed.
"The pump motors are electric, but they will be 20 percent more efficient," said Flathman.
Currently there are no plans to convert any building on the main campus of geothermal energy, partly because of space constraints. But systems can be installed in buildings University of devices such as the Technology Centre of Kansas and the recreation center for students, Flathman said.
"We see this as a first step," said Scott. "We are looking for the right steps."
If construction goes according to plans, the teams begin to replace the internal components of the new geothermal system - new hoses, water pumps and fans - after classes ended in May, said Paul Stewart, Planning Director facilities.

Rabe Hardware offers the complete line of GeoComfort geothermal equipment and accessories for residential and commercial heating, cooling and hot water systems. The company has significant experience in the installation of geothermal systems.
They have been doing this by showing that in both commercial and residential installations, geothermal heat pump systems typically have lower maintenance costs than conventional systems as all equipment is installed inside the building or underground.

Geothermal term actually implies the Earth / Ground (Geo) Heat (thermal). Geothermal heat pumps or ground supply, review field advantage or groundwater constant temperatures. These heat pumps use geothermal energy to heat the vitality and / or cool your home.
A refrigerant loop with a compressor extracts heat from the first appearance (ground) and the pump to the heating loop in your home. It is primarily an identical procedure that is reflected in your refrigerator: heat is extracted via a compressor and a refrigerant loop from the inside of your refrigerator / freezer and rejected into your home.
In summer, the geothermal heat pump reverses the cycle, if you have a technical air conditioning and heat the house is released into soil or ground h2o.
What helps make such a heat source heat pumps a good option for home heating and cooling is that they do not rely on outside air temperatures. These heat pumps will heat your home most effectively on a windy, zero-degree winter months, day as a 40-degree day. Furnished program, your house is well insulated and limited.
Geothermal heat pumps are also very effective for heating and cooling your residence. They use the energy of 25-50% less than conventional heating and cooling techniques (Source: U.S. DOE).
Residential applications of geothermal energy technologies use water for drinking h2o h2o heat pumps or air.
H2o Pumps Water Source Heat
Drink water with pumps for drinking water geothermal heat are typically used for heating. They replace the gas furnace or oil that you may be able to have time to heat your home and with h2o.
It is important to know that heat pumps are most effective when the variation in temperature between the heat source (ground) and heat sink (ground heat or radiators) is small.
Ground temperatures table anywhere from fifty to 75 deg F, based on where you live. This indicates that geothermal heat pumps are generally not suited to the demands of hot water baseboards, which are developed for heating temperatures of 180 deg F. H2O heat radiators on the ground and low-temperature application of drinking water temperatures in the range of 95 to 140 deg F.
Some newer heat pump are now equipped desuperheaters said that transfers excess heat from the compressor pump geothermal heat for domestic water heaters. Your geothermal heat pump can also effectively and quickly to heat water for your bath, shower and sink.
