Family, friends bid farewell to St. Croix soldier
ST. CROIX - An emotional day spent on the rest of the U.S. Army Sgt. Jorge Scatliffe began and ended Wednesday with the melancholy song of "I'll Fly Away".
Many mourners near the native 32-year-old St. Croix shouted to him and to God as the pastor prepared to close the coffin in the Apostolic Faith Mission Church. Some collapsed in distress, others take their comfort and direct them to the seats.There were screams and groans, and the level of hysteria spread through the church, someone spontaneously sang the first line of the song: "Some happy morning when this life is over, I'll Fly Away. "
The tune spread rapidly. Almost everyone stood. And just as quickly as the spread groan tearing across the room, the mourners covered the song.
After a service with sermons from pastors elevation and displacement of words Scatliffe brother, uncle and a few dignitaries, the soldier's body was taken to Kingshill Cemetery, where he was buried after a hello to the gun and the game of "Taps."
Scatliffe mother, Sarah Scatliffe, filed a red rose on the coffin of her son and said: "'Til We Meet Again. Goodnight, baby. Goodnight.
And once again, the community joined in, singing "When I die, hallelujah by and by, I'll Fly Away".
A highly decorated soldier, Scatliffe died April 3 in an incident of non-combat-related while stationed with the cavalry division in Mosul, Iraq. It was his fourth deployment in Afghanistan since the U.S. invasion began in 2003, officials said.
The U.S. Defense Department said it was still investigating his death.
Scatliffe united family of origin was from the Dominican Republic and is still deeply rooted in their heritage, "said Sarah Scatliffe, who raised his three son as a single mom Estate Sion Farm after their father, Gerome Scatliffe is died in 1985.
Jorge Scatliffe was in the middle of the three - stuck between Robert and Raymond Scatliffe, who both joined the Navy.
The funeral service was held at the church where the family regularly attended services Scatliffe.

Many of the speakers commended Sarah Scatliffe for bringing up her boys well - with love and the fear of God, they said. One of those was her son, Robert Scatliffe.
"He loves you," Robert Scatliffe told his mother during the eulogy. "I didn't say loved. He still loves you.
