9-year-old inventor cleans up at EIRC contest
Five K-9 and their teachers, three police departments in the region, flew in a Coast Guard helicopter Wednesday during a training exercise at the farm in Elk Township Rambo. The purpose of the exercise was to familiarize the dogs with it ¹ s like being inside and take off in the trade. Officers from Glassboro and East Greenwich and Franklin townships took part. A crew of U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic City helicopter and lent their expertise."A clean refrigerator uses less power and increases efficiency," the 9-year-old said she told her innovation award for his class on Monday.
Through the gifted and talented program in the area, led by teacher Mary Aruffo, students in third and fourth year in a competition held in March each invention. The winners in each grade in the third and Alicia Rena Cuneo in the fourth then compete with other students two weeks ago at the William J. Hughes Technical Center outside Atlantic City. The contest was organized by Mullica Hill-based education and information resource center for students through education invention.
Alicia took the first place, and wore her gold medal during the school Monday.
"Anything that does Alicia, all his hard work eventually translated into something exceptional," said Aruffo the room full of third graders Monday morning after Alicia has presented its innovation.
Alicia "Dust Bunny Destroyer" was modeled on an existing device to remove the dust under the refrigerator. Amendments, however, included a more-flexible handle to get into tight places, and a pelt of hair covering, rather than picking up more dust.
And she had the bags of dust bunnies to prove it.
Throughout the project, Alicia had to keep a logbook to track their ideas, plan and paper to take notes on how it worked.
"We had to find a product, find problems with it, find materials that could solve the problem, then build and test," said Alicia.
Alicia's creativity sparked new ideas from other students in her class, who witnessed the success of his innovation. Aruffo when asked students who had their own ideas or want to be inventors, almost all their hands went up.
"This particular embodiment, hopefully, is something that will inspire other kids," said Aruffo."It's amazing how many of you already have an idea in your mind," she said. "You have all this wonderful gift to bring something to the table and to get there. Just want to get there, just as Alicia did.
