Food bank works on emergency fund

Harvest Food Bank Hope has raised over $ 450,000 for a $ 2 million emergency campaign launched in recent weeks.

Food bank officials announced last month the agency faced a shortage of operating the most in its history of 30 years - and could deter families for the first time unless it can fill the gap.

The hope is to raise the money before the end of June to maintain the operations of the agency's apartment as he prepares for a projected increase in monthly expenses for the future.

A special appeal was made during the campaign for companies and businesses, and so far two have announced major matching grants.

Mungo Homes initially announced a grant of $ 150,000 once twice that much has been generated in donations. Earlier this month, donations have reached $ 306,293, the Food Bank Qualifying Match Mungo.

Earlier this week, Southeastern Freight Lines has announced a similar challenge grant and promised $ 150,000 more again $ 300 000 was raised.

"We are aware of the enormity of the mission of Harvest Hope and want to do our part to ensure that families suffering from hunger in our community have a safety net to give hope," said Tobin Cassels, president of Southeastern Freight Lines. "We are proud to work with Harvest Hope in an effort to put food on the tables in 20 counties."

area companies and individuals can send checks to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201 or donate online at harvesthope.org.

How can you get baby clothes for less? | Online Shopping

There are many good quality low priced baby cloths to be found in consignment stores. Many times they have 1/2 price days. You can find local ones in your yellow pages.

I’ve also bought very good quality, name brand baby cloths from Craig’s list and was very happy with the price I paid for the amount of cloths I got.

You can also try garage sales and the Goodwill/second hand stores. Especially during the first year, a baby may only wear something once and it’s too small. I even find lots of items with the tags still on them.

GARAGE SALES – GARAGE SALES – GARAGE SALES!

Spend a few bucks on gas and drive to the upper-middle class suburbs nearest you. Map out a good half-dozen or so garage sales on a given day. Check the paper for the ones that are in the right area and specifically list children’s clothing.

You will generally pay between 5-cents to twenty-five cents on-the-dollar for top-quality baby clothes. (Baby Gap, Children’s Place, Gymboree, etc.) What many new parents don’t realize is how LITTLE wear children’s clothing receives before the children are older than two or three. Most of this stuff will look brand new … in fact, many times we buy garage sale clothing with the tags still on!

ANOTHER good option is to check around for annual or semi-annual CHURCH SALES … many city churches have a huge sale a couple of times a year where all of the members bring in clothing to sell, and these can also be goldmines!

Believe it or not, if you are mindful of how much you spend on shipping, you can sometimes get great clothing deals on eBay as well … it usually helps to buy in “lots” where you are purchasing a bundle of clothes in a single auction.

Good luck!
