Wish is granted
GLADSTONE - There is a saying that sometimes a door closes so that new ones can open. An especially heavy door closed for Tim Lehtikangas, 17, of Wells when he was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital heart defect in which there is no cure. The left side of his heart is severely underdeveloped, causing his heart to beat twice as fast as normal.
There is a three-stage surgery available for HLHS called the Norwood procedure that can prolong the life of the heart. He received the first stage at two days old. However in the final stage of the surgery, called the Fontan procedure, his pulmonary artery collapsed.
The ailment limits what Lehtikangas is able to do, but he has found ways to pursue his interests. Tim is an avid golfer, a sport he has been able to pursue and enjoy.
"I can't play contact sports, but I can play goif," said Lehtikangas. "It helps me stay out of trouble. It's something I can do without hurting myself."
Still, with HLHS Tim isn't able to walk a golf course during a game of 18 holes, so a golf cart is more than just a luxury, its a requirement.
That's where the Make A Wish foundation came in. Tim's stepmother, Kathy, got him involved in the process and a representative from the organization contacted Kirt Cossette, who owns A1 Sports, a Yamaha golf cart dealership in Escanaba.
"The make a wish foundation contacted us and told us one of Tim's wishes was to have his own golf cart. They only had a certain amount of money to spend, so A1 Sports took the cart and discounted it to stay within the budget they wanted and Tim was able to obtain a golf cart," said Cossette.
"We got Tim a brand new 2010 Yamaha golf cart with a full 4-year factory warranty. Tim is a very avid Philadelphia Eagles fan, so we put Eagles logos on it. It has a windshield, hubcaps and a club protector on top."
The decked out cart was presented to Tim and his family Wednesday at Gladstone Golf Club, his favorite area course.
With the cart, Tim will no longer have to walk the course and will be able to play the sport he loves unhindered.
Lehtikangas began golfing as a toddler and his interest in the game grew as he got older. He enjoyed the Masters tournament on TV.
"My favorite golfers are Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. I thought Tiger was going to win (the Masters) but (Charl) Schwartzel got it," said Lehtikangas.
One of his other passions is cooking, another skill he picked up at a very young age. Currently a sophomore at Mid Peninsula High School, Tim plans on going to culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu, when he graduates.
