McCuskers' cause near to their heart
The nursery had been built. The clothes and the toys had been bought.
South Torrance softball coach Dana Kuwahara McCusker and her husband, Mike, were ready to welcome their first child into the world.
All the prenatal tests were encouraging. Even the delivery was perfect, and Shane McCusker was born on Sept. 9, 2010, at Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks. He weighed 6 pounds and 15 ounces.
"He gave us the most indescribable feeling of happiness we had ever felt," McCusker said.
It was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives. That all changed in a heartbeat.
A parent's worst nightmare
It started with Shane's cry.
McCusker said she didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but immediately the nurses and doctors knew his cry did not sound right.
There was no panic. Thinking there might be fluid in Shane's lungs, they took him for a breathing treatment and told the McCuskers that Shane would return in an hour.
Soon that became two hours as doctors could not produce the sound they wanted from him and they began running more tests.
Tests revealed that instead of the heart being on the left side of the chest and angled to the left, Shane's heart was on the right side of the chest and angled to the right. Immediate surgery was likely needed.
When the cardiologist arrived, he told the McCuskers that Shane had a heart condition called dextrocardia with the possibility of heterotaxy syndrome. Essentially, Shane's veins and organs would function like an average person, but in the opposite direction.
The main concern was that there wasn't enough oxygen getting to his blood. They wanted to air-lift him to UCLA for emergency surgery.
McCusker and her husband were not allowed to make the immediate trip to UCLA until the new mother was discharged.
"At this point, I'd do anything for this child," McCusker said. "I wanted to give him the best, no matter the cost. I wanted the best care. I wanted the best surgeon. And he got that at UCLA."
Doctors soon discovered it was a lot more serious than a reversed system.
Shane's liver was in the wrong place. He was born without a spleen. More importantly, the veins from the lungs that were supposed to go straight into the heart were being redirected through other parts of Shane's anatomy.
To McCusker's relief, the surgery went well once again. Doctors advised the new parents to go home for the night and catch up on some sleep after two restless days.
