How to capture a tropical feel with plants hardy to the Pacific Northwest

Garden trends come and go, especially in the Northwest, where we haven't yet settled on an iconic style and perhaps never will. With an enviable climate, rich soil (yes, clay is rich) and many-membered club of horticulturists and plant explorers, Oregonians have been exposed to influences from around the world. We can -- and do -- pick from Japanese discipline, French formal, English romance, South African diversity and Mexican courtyards.

The tropical plants of Asia and South America migrated into our gardens in a big way about 10 years ago. The style was dubbed Tropicalismo, and even as other fashions take prominence, the boldness of banana, canna and bamboo remain.

Bamboo especially has taken on a major role. Education from experts such as Ian Connor of Connor Bamboo and Ned Jaquith of Bamboo Garden help lighten bamboo's bad rep. Yes, the running types can get out of control. But with committed yet minimal maintenance, this mysterious plant brings an atmosphere to the garden like no other. From a most-effective screen to an exotic stand-alone specimen, bamboo does it all. If you're still not ready to take the plunge, Connor suggests dipping your toe into the large family of well-behaved clumping bamboo, which stays where it's put with no argument.

BAMBOO TIDBITS
-- Bamboo is the fastest-growing woody plant on the planet. Some will shoot up a foot a day.
-- Other animals besides pandas eat bamboo, including the mountain gorilla of Africa.
-- A grove of bamboo produces up to 35 percent more oxygen than the same size grove of hardwood trees and absorbs four times as much carbon.
-- Bamboo has greater tensile strength than steel and withstands compression better than concrete.

RUNNING VS. CLUMPING BAMBOO

The most recognizable bamboo is called running bamboo (also referred to as timber bamboo), with towering culms that can get 75 feet tall, though they more commonly are
30 to 40 feet tall and 4 to 7 inches in diameter at maturity.

ULRICH DE VARENS, sembrava robetta e invece... su J I C K Y

Lily Prune Fizzy Tea: a chi piace Elizabeth Arden Green Tea andrà benissimo.

Molto amato, a quanto pare.

Rectoverso Sun Sea: profumo fresco floreale.
